Job Description

The primary responsibility of this position is providing traffic safety planning services to DOT Offices and Districts as well as to local agencies statewide.

Typical work includes:

+ Administration and management of the Strategic Highway Safety Plan and Traffic Safety Research Program

+ Investigation and preparation of safety studies

+ Development and management of special safety projects/programs

+ Serves as a representative of Safety Engineering Section for project meetings, traffic incident management committee, and multi-disciplinary safety teams.

These roles require the application of transportation safety principles to the unique problems encountered as well as knowledge of the project development process and the DOT organizational structure. Coordination and communication with various DOT offices, as well as federal, state and local agencies is essential. This includes making presentations at public meetings such as workshops, public hearings, city council meetings, and professional conferences.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university and experience equal to eight years of full-time professional work in transportation planning*/engineering;


licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Board of Engineering Examiners and four years of qualifying transportation planning* experience;


employees with current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to two years of full-time work as a Transportation Planner 3 or Transportation Engineer Specialist.

* Transportation planning includes preparing planning contracts and grants; preparing functional classification appeals; analyzing transportation project plans/reports to identify problems; developing portions of statewide transportation plans; or conducting/coordinating transportation research projects.
