Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Accountant III for the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology at Iowa State University will independently administer and manage the department finances. This position will be responsible for all fiscal aspects of the department including collaboration with the chair on the department's fiscal direction. This position is expected to be the fiscal expert for the department and will advise faculty and staff to ensure responsible management of fund accounts and compliance with all University fiscal policies.

The incumbent manages complex financial and budgetary issues for the department, which is housed in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) with a budget of ~$4.6M. This includes coordinating a blend of multiple federal, state, and private funding sources over multiple fiscal years. Key activities include managing a variety of advance, state, foundation, and grant accounts. The accountant will lead financial processes and supporting audits/reviews. These activities require an objective analysis of sustainability, including realistic revenue and cost projections. Responsibilities also include creation of accounting spreadsheets; review and approval of accounting transactions and cost allocations; pre-award support which includes budget development and grant submission; and interpretation and preparation of reports regarding department financial activity. The incumbent will supervise two professional staff is expected to train and direct that employee's fiscal duties.

The successful candidate will possess strong organizational skills along with the ability to create complex spreadsheets using standard software. An in-depth understanding of accounting systems is essential due to the variety and complexity of the accounting functions performed. The candidate will possess excellent interpersonal communication skills to effectively provide customer service to faculty, staff, vendors, and other account administrators. A strong work ethic and the ability to work independently as well as with a team will be essential for success in this position.
